APEDA Boosts Global Branding Efforts for Indian Cashew Nuts

APEDA Drives Global Recognition for Indian Cashew Nuts

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) is pushing Indian cashew nuts to global prominence through an ambitious branding campaign. This initiative highlights the health benefits, versatility, and premium quality of cashews, making them more appealing to international buyers. As one of APEDA’s 25 star products, Indian cashew nuts stand out as a vital contributor to India’s agricultural exports.

APEDA has identified Kollam in Kerala and Chandgarh in Maharashtra as key hubs for cluster-based cashew development. By focusing on these regions, APEDA ensures consistent production and quality improvement. This targeted approach allows Indian cashew nuts to compete effectively in global markets.

Furthermore, collaborations with Maharashtra Parivartan Sansthan are streamlining exports through JSW Jaigarh Port, which benefits producers in Maharashtra and neighboring states. Consequently, supply chains are becoming more efficient, boosting export potential.

Diverse Applications of Indian Cashew Nuts and By-Products

Indian cashew nuts and their by-products serve a variety of industries:
  • Cashew Shell Liquid (CNSL): India exported 3,508 tonnes of CNSL worth $1.93 million in FY 2023–24 to markets like China, Vietnam, and Mexico.
  • Cardanol: Exports totaled 9,714 tonnes, with Vietnam, South Korea, and the UK as major buyers.
  • Cashew Apple Products: Rich in antioxidants, cashew apples are used for juices, syrups, and even alcoholic beverages.
  • Cashew Gum: This by-product supports the food and pharmaceutical industries with versatile applications.

Incentives Drive Export Growth for Indian Cashew Nuts

APEDA’s Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) for FY 2022–2026 offers exporters financial support to enhance infrastructure. This includes facilities for cold storage, grading, and packaging. Additionally, exporters benefit from participating in global fairs and exhibitions, where they showcase Indian cashew nuts to a broader audience.

Traditional markets like the UAE and the US remain crucial for cashew exports. However, APEDA is also exploring newer markets in Spain, Kuwait, and the UK, further diversifying opportunities.

Modernization Efforts Empower Cashew Exporters

Exporters are modernizing their facilities to improve efficiency. APEDA’s financing scheme covers 40% of machinery costs, up to $240,000, enabling producers to meet international quality standards. Consequently, these upgrades ensure that Indian cashew nuts remain competitive globally.

The Future of Indian Cashew Nuts

Indian cashew nuts are poised for remarkable growth, supported by APEDA’s strategic branding and export incentives. With a sustainable approach to production and innovative by-products, the Indian cashew sector is set to dominate global markets. Furthermore, the cluster-based strategy guarantees consistent quality, ensuring long-term success.
