Gram Price Expected to Reach USD 9.00 in January-February
Gram Prices in India:
- Gram prices are expected to rise to approximately USD 9.00 per kg in January and February due to a 10 to 15% decline in gram cultivation and short supply.
- On December 16, 2024, gram prices in Delhi fluctuated between USD 7.95 per kg and USD 8.50 per kg before dropping to USD 8.30 per kg.
Gram Supply Shortage in India:
- India is currently facing a severe gram shortage, with a stock of only 800,000 tonnes at ports. The country needs about 2 million tonnes over the next three months, creating a shortfall of 1.2 million tonnes.
- India expects to receive 200,000 tonnes of new gram by February. Imports will fill the gap, with an expected shipment of 225,000 to 250,000 tonnes in December. January will see an import of 200,000 tonnes.
- Imported gram for January delivery is expected to cost USD 7.20 per kg, while Reddy Reddy gram will cost USD 8.05 per kg.
Peas Import Duty and Government Decision:
- The import duty exemption for peas expires on December 31, 2024. Industry leaders are debating whether the government should extend this exemption. There is an existing stock of 800,000 to 1 million tonnes of peas at the ports.
Gram Sowing and Shifting Trends in Maharashtra:
- Official sowing figures show an increase in gram cultivation this year, but sowing will be 10 to 15% lower compared to last year.
- Many farmers in Maharashtra have shifted from traditional gram farming to growing white gram and maize, contributing to the decline in gram production.
