Ukraine's Grain December Recovery Brings Optimism

Despite early disruptions in December, Ukraine’s grain exports picked up significantly, showcasing the industry’s adaptability in navigating new regulatory challenges. During the week of December 13-19, Ukraine exported an impressive 955,000 tons of grain, nearly doubling the previous week’s volume. This swift recovery highlights the determination of exporters to overcome initial hurdles and meet growing international demand.

Breaking Records: Ukraine’s Stellar Grain Export Performance

In the 2024/25 marketing year, Ukraine’s grain exports have reached 20.317 million tons, a notable rise from 16.013 million tons in the same period last year. Key figures reveal a strong performance:

• Wheat exports surged from 6.723 million tons to 9.424 million tons.
• Barley exports more than doubled to 1.95 million tons from 0.946 million tons.
• Corn exports edged up slightly to 8.623 million tons, compared to 8.206 million tons.
• Rye shipments jumped to 10,800 tons, up from just 1,000 tons.

However, flour exports have slowed, with volumes dropping to 36,000 tons from 54,500 tons, reflecting changes in market preferences and demand.

Eyeing a Historic Milestone: 2024 Exports on Track to Set New Records

With projections indicating that 2024 grain exports could reach 77 million tons, Ukraine is set to achieve near-record levels. This figure surpasses the 67.3 million tons exported in 2023, underscoring the resilience of its agricultural sector. Estimated revenues could hit $24.5 billion, a significant increase from $22.1 billion last year.

New Markets Take Center Stage as Europe’s Share Declines

While the European Union remains a vital trading partner, its share of Ukrainian grain exports dropped to 55% from 60% last year. This shift signals Ukraine’s success in diversifying its markets, reopening trade routes with traditional buyers, and exploring untapped regions.
