Vietnam's Cassia Gains Organic Certification for European Market

Vietnam's Cassia Gains Organic Certification for European Market

Vietnam's Cassia Certified for Europe

Vietnam's cassia from Quang Ninh province has just received organic certification from Control Union Certifications. This crucial approval allows local farmers to start exporting their cassia to European markets, promising a boost for the local economy.

In the regions of Dam Ha, Tien Yen, and Binh Lieu in Quang Ninh, cassia trees cover over 3,400 hectares. These areas are at the forefront of expanding cassia production, aimed at meeting increasing demand from abroad. Farmers like Mr. Han from Binh Lieu District are seeing the fruits of their labor pay off. This season alone, his family harvested cassia worth nearly 80 million VND from two hectares of land. This income is essential for his family, helping cover daily needs and fund his children's education.

The Value of Vietnam's Cassia Farming

Cassia isn't just profitable—it's significantly more lucrative than many other crops. A mature cassia plantation can yield about 580 million VND per hectare after 15 years. This income comes from various stages of the growth cycle, including thinning and the final harvest of branches, bark, and wood. Such earnings make cassia farming twice as profitable as growing other timber types.

Challenges in the Cassia Market

However, the road hasn't been entirely smooth. Cassia farmers often find themselves at the mercy of market fluctuations, with prices heavily influenced by traders. While there's been an effort to create a variety of cassia-based products, these initiatives haven't yet taken off as hoped. Ensuring fair and stable pricing remains a key challenge.

European Certification and Its Benefits

The European certification is not just about meeting export standards—it also signifies the high quality of Quang Ninh’s cassia. This cassia is notably low in coumarin, making it especially appealing in European markets compared to other varieties.

In response to the growing demand and the new certification, plans are in place to increase cassia cultivation by 200 hectares in the districts of Dam Ha, Tien Yen, and Ba Che. Local authorities are taking steps to ensure that production meets the high standards required by European buyers.

The Future of Cassia in Quang Ninh

As Quang Ninh's cassia makes its way to European markets, the implications for local farmers are profound. The certification not only means better market access but also encourages practices that keep the land healthy and productive. This move could set a positive precedent for sustainable agriculture across the region.
