Global Sesame Market in China's Sesame Imports Surge Despite Slight Price Decline
As of 23 December 2024, the total port stock at Qingdao port is 162,700 MT. China’s sesame imports grew from 779,040 MT in 2023 (Jan to Oct) to 958,692 MT in the same period of 2024, marking a 23% increase.However, while volumes surged, the average import price fell slightly from USD 1,668/MT to USD 1,637/MT. Imports from Niger and Nigeria showed the largest growth, surging from 163,446 MT at USD 1,588/MT in 2023 to 283,364 MT at USD 1,675/MT in 2024.
Meanwhile, Tanzania's volumes rose from 126,014 MT to 138,252 MT, although prices dropped from USD 1,840/MT to USD 1,558/MT. Similarly, Mozambique's imports increased from 72,945 MT to 86,227 MT, but prices fell from USD 1,781/MT to USD 1,568/MT.
Indian Sesame Market Holds Firm with Festival Demand
In India, sesame prices remain strong due to the ongoing winter season and the Makara Sankranti festival. Currently:- Natural Shortex sesame is priced at USD 1,68 per kg.
- 99-1 sesame is trading at USD 1,54 per kg.
- Hulled sesame commands a premium at USD 1,92 per kg.
Additionally, Brazilian sesame imports are projected at 50,000 MT by the end of December. Furthermore, an additional 20,000 MT, traded in October, is still in transit.
Nigeria: Mixed Sesame Crop Quality Amid Weather Challenges
In Nigeria, the 2024 sesame crop began with high-quality seeds from the Taraba region in August. These seeds were whitish and had controlled moisture levels. However, sesame from Bauchi, Kano, and Jigawa regions faced challenges. Intermittent rains between September and October affected quality.Currently, arrivals are coming from Yobe, Niger, Lafia, and Benue regions. Meanwhile, production in Jigawa, Kano, and Bauchi has nearly ended. The total crop size is estimated at 320,000-350,000 MT. Of this, 225,000 MT is already held by exporters and stockists for future sales.
Burkina Faso: Steady Crop with China as Key Market
The 2024 sesame season in Burkina Faso began in October and November. Early arrivals came from Fada and Portinga. Later, the Bobo-Dioulasso region started sending sesame by late November.Importantly, the Wagah region produced 50,000-60,000 MT of whitish seeds. However, the rest of the crop consists of mixed-quality sesame, mostly exported to China. The estimated crop size for Burkina Faso is 180,000 MT, including contributions from neighboring Ghana.
