Statewide Increase in Chickpea Sowing
Chickpea sowing in Gujarat has seen a significant rise this Rabi season, with a 25 percent increase compared to the same period last year. According to the latest data from the State Agriculture Department, chickpeas have been sown across 0,79 million hectares as of December 23, 2024. This marks an increase of 0,16 million hectares over the 0,63 million hectares sown by the end of January last year.The current sowing is also 33 percent higher than the three-year average for this period, which stands at 0,59 million hectares.
Strong Growth in Key Regions
Saurashtra Leads the Way
Saurashtra, the largest chickpea-producing region in Gujarat, has shown the most significant growth. Sowing in this region has reached 0,58 million hectares, up from 0,42 million hectares last year. This represents an increase of 0,17 million hectares or 39,62 percent.North Gujarat
Chickpea sowing in North Gujarat has also risen, reaching 0,076 million hectares compared to 0,065 million hectares last year. This is a growth of 0,011 million hectares or 17,51 percent.Kutch
In Kutch, chickpeas have been sown over 0,001 million hectares, a slight increase from last year’s 0,0008 million hectares, marking a growth of 12,50 percent.Declines in Central and South Gujarat
Not all regions have seen an increase in chickpea sowing this season. Central and South Gujarat have reported declines:- Central Gujarat: Sowing has dropped to 0,11 million hectares, down from 0,12 million hectares last year, a decrease of 0,015 million hectares or 12,37 percent.
- South Gujarat: Sowing has decreased to 0,023 million hectares, compared to 0,027 million hectares last year. This marks a reduction of 0,005 million hectares or 17,58 percent.
