India has nearly wrapped up its wheat sowing for the 2024-25 rabi season, with farmers and stakeholders optimistic about a bumper harvest. The weather will play a crucial role in determining the success of the upcoming season.The total area under wheat reached 31.97 million hectares, slightly up from 31.83 million hectares last year, reflecting a modest increase of 0.54 million hectares. Officials are optimistic that this expansion will help achieve the production target of 115 million tonnes (mt) for the season.
Key wheat-growing states have reported smooth supply of essential inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation water. Officials noted no significant pest issues so far. However, weather conditions in the next three months will be critical to achieving the target production.
Rabi Crop Overview
The total area under all rabi crops stands at 62.28 million hectares, slightly higher than last year’s 62.15 million hectares.- Pulses: Sowing reached 13.72 million hectares, up from 13.60 million hectares last year. Chana (gram) accounted for 9.45 million hectares, while masur (lentil) was sown on 1.74 million hectares, slightly below last year’s figure of 1.78 million hectares.
- Coarse Cereals: The area remained steady at 5.22 million hectares, compared to 5.28 million hectares last year.
- Oilseeds: Sowing dipped to 9.67 million hectares, down from 10.16 million hectares last year. Mustard, the key oilseed crop, was sown on 8.85 million hectares, compared to 9.37 million hectares last year, as some farmers shifted to wheat.
