Significant Growth in Chickpea Sowing Across Gujarat

Chickpea sowing in Gujarat has increased substantially this season, with a rise of 33.13% compared to the same period last year. According to the latest data from the State Agriculture Department, 8,39,700 hectares of chickpeas have been sown across the state as of January 6. This figure is 2,09,000 hectares higher than the 6,30,700 hectares recorded during the same period last year.

Additionally, the current sowing area is 0.90% higher than the three-year average of 8,32,192 hectares for this time of year.

Regional Highlights of Chickpea Sowing

Saurashtra Leads with Remarkable Growth

Saurashtra, the largest chickpea-producing region in Gujarat, recorded significant growth. By January 6, chickpeas had been sown across 6,17,200 hectares, an increase of 2,00,300 hectares compared to 4,16,900 hectares last year.

North Gujarat Sees Steady Growth

In North Gujarat, chickpea sowing rose by 16,100 hectares, reaching a total of 80,600 hectares compared to 64,500 hectares last year.

Kutch Shows the Highest Percentage Increase

Kutch saw the steepest percentage increase, with sowing rising from 800 hectares last year to 1,100 hectares this season, an increase of 37.50%.

Decline in Central and South Gujarat

Central Gujarat Faces a Slight Decline

In Central Gujarat, chickpea sowing dropped from 1,21,200 hectares last year to 1,15,200 hectares this season, reflecting a decline of 4.95%.

South Gujarat Records a Marginal Drop

South Gujarat also saw a decrease in sowing, with the area reduced from 27,300 hectares last year to 25,700 hectares this season, a drop of 5.86%.
