Ukraine's Agriculture Structure to Shift in 2025: Soybeans and Rapeseed Decline, Corn Gains
Reasons Behind the Decline in Soybeans and Rapeseed
Ukraine is set to adjust its agricultural focus in 2025, reducing the area sown with soybeans and rapeseed while expanding the area under corn. This change reflects changes of global market presentation, according to the Ukrainian Association of Agrarian Business (UCAB).The sharp decline in global soybean prices has prompted Ukrainian farmers to reduce the area sown with this crop. In 2024, Ukraine harvested a record 6 million tonnes of soybeans, taking advantage of favorable global market conditions. However, market profitability has dropped significantly, making soybeans less attractive for cultivation in 2025.
Similarly, adverse weather during the autumn sowing season reduced the area under winter rapeseed. Farmers struggled with poor planting conditions, which further limited the scope of rapeseed cultivation for the upcoming year.
Corn Gains Priority
In contrast, corn is seeing renewed interest from Ukrainian farmers. The global market is experiencing a rise in demand for corn, encouraging an increase in its sowing areas for spring 2025."Corn sowing will rise because the growing global demand for this crop makes it a more profitable choice," said Svitlana Lytvyn, head of UCAB’s analytical department.
Impact on Ukraine’s Agriculture
These adjustments are part of a broader trend of Ukrainian agriculture adapting to global market conditions. The record soybean harvest in 2024 showcased Ukraine’s ability to capitalize on favorable prices, but changing market dynamics in 2025 have shifted the focus. Corn, with its rising demand, presents an opportunity for Ukrainian farmers to maintain profitability. Conclusion
Ukraine’s agricultural landscape is poised for a notable shift in 2025. While soybean and rapeseed areas decline due to falling prices and adverse weather, corn sowing will expand as global demand for the crop grows. This strategic adjustment reflects the resilience and adaptability of Ukrainian farmers to changing market conditions.Click here to reach our trading platfrom CMBroker
