Canadian Dry Peas Production To Boost In 2024-25

Canadian Dry Peas Production to Rise by 15% in 2024-25

Canada expects dry peas production to increase by 15% in the 2024-25 season, reaching 3.0 million tonnes. This growth has been driven by improved yields and a larger harvested area. According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), farmers have played a key role in achieving these gains.

Farmers Boost Yields and Expand Acreage

Farmers have increased dry peas yields by 8% compared to last year due to better growing conditions. They have primarily focused on yellow peas, which will account for approximately 2.4 million tonnes, followed by green peas at 0.45 million tonnes. Other varieties will make up the remainder of the production.

Supply Grows Slightly While Exports Remain Steady

The total supply of dry peas is set to increase by just 2%, reaching 3.36 million tonnes, as smaller carry-in stocks offset the higher output. Exporters plan to maintain shipments at 2.4 million tonnes, despite the supply increase. This steady export level will likely result in higher carry-out stocks.

Prices Show Mixed Trends

Dry pea prices are expected to drop by 8% compared to the previous season. In November, Saskatchewan farmers raised on-farm prices for yellow peas and green peas by USD 5 per tonne and USD 15 per tonne, respectively. Exporters report steady demand and expect prices to stabilize, supported by Indian buyers preparing for their winter pulse crop.

U.S. Farmers Expand Dry Peas Area

In the United States, farmers have increased the area seeded to dry peas by 2%, bringing it to 0.4 million hectares, driven by expansions in North Dakota. With above-average yields, the USDA projects U.S. dry peas production to grow by 7%, reaching 0.87 million tonnes for 2024-25.
