India's Big Cardamom Prices Are On Rise, Can't Stop

India's Big Cardamom Prices Are On Rise, Can't Stop

Big Cardamom Prices Expected to Stay High as Supply Drops

Big cardamom prices are climbing due to limited availability at auctions and steady sales in local markets. If the current trends continue, prices could remain strong in the weeks ahead.

Lower Supply Driving Prices

Auction arrivals of big cardamom have been unusually low, which is pushing prices higher. In wholesale markets, scissor-cut cardamom is priced at USD 21,85–21,98 per kg. Prices saw a small drop of USD 0,96 recently, after an earlier increase of USD 1,20–1,33.

Production Hit by Bad Weather

Adverse weather has taken a toll on big cardamom production this season. Heavy rains and flooding in Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states caused crop losses of 60–70% during the first harvest. The second harvest also suffered, with high temperatures and pest attacks reducing yields in key producing regions like Sikkim.

Auction and Export Performance

On January 16, big cardamom auction prices ranged between USD 18,61–22,80 per kg. Although prices have fluctuated, local market sales have improved slightly, helping stabilize the market.

Exports have also picked up. In the first half of FY 2024-25, India exported 659.68 tonnes of big cardamom worth USD 12,18 million. This is a significant rise compared to the same period last year when 458.15 tonnes were exported, earning USD 4,65 million.

Challenges Across Regions

  • Nepal: Daily arrivals of 500–1,000 bags are reported, but high import costs are affecting exports.
  • Bhutan and Sikkim: Both regions have seen reduced production due to bad weather.
  • India: Domestic supplies remain tight, pushing prices higher.

Conclusion With Limited Availability

With limited supply and steady demand both locally and internationally, big cardamom prices are expected to stay firm for now. However, weather conditions and future crop yields will play a key role in determining price movements. Farmers and traders are closely monitoring these changes to adjust their strategies accordingly.
