Limited Supply Pushes Barley Prices Higher in Ukraine

Limited Supply Pushes Barley Prices Higher in Ukraine

Barley Prices in Ukraine Match Corn and Feed Wheat

For the first time in three years, barley prices in Ukraine have reached the same level as corn and feed wheat. Strong demand and limited supply from farmers have pushed prices higher.

Ukraine exported 2 million tonnes of barley in the 2024/25 marketing year as of January 17, an increase of 64% compared to 1.22 million tonnes during the same period last year. However, exports have slowed recently:
  • In the first 17 days of January 2025, exports totaled just 9,000 tonnes, compared to 146,000 tonnes during the same time in 2024.

Barley Prices Rise

Barley prices have increased as exporters struggle with limited supply and challenges in forming shipments:
  • Feed barley prices range from USD 0,21 to 0,22 per kg at Black Sea ports.
  • Prices for deliveries to Danube ports are slightly higher, at USD 0,21 to 0,22 per kg.
  • Feed wheat and corn prices are also slightly up, now at USD 0,21 per kg in Black Sea ports.

Local Buyers Compete for Barley

Domestic feed producers are actively buying barley for feed, offering prices between USD 0,20 to 0,21 per kg. However, if prices continue to rise, many processors may switch to cheaper alternatives like wheat or corn.

Malting barley demand remains weak due to challenges in selling malt on international markets. Processing plants are offering USD 0,20 to 0,21 per kg, but interest remains low.

Farmers Plan to Increase Barley Sowing

With barley prices now matching corn and feed wheat, farmers may expand the sowing area for spring barley in the upcoming season. However, rising prices could reduce demand from both exporters and local buyers, possibly stabilizing the market in the months ahead.
