Sunflower Prices in Ukraine Reach Seasonal Highs

This week, sunflower prices in Ukraine hit a seasonal peak, with processors offering USD 0,34 per kg for sunflower seeds with 52% oil content. Strong demand from processors, driven by high sunflower oil prices, has pushed prices to levels last seen in October and November.

Farmers Face Rising Prices and Market Challenges

Sunflower purchase prices increased by USD 0,01 to 0,02 per kg over the week due to growing competition among processors. Smaller processors, however, are struggling to keep up, as expensive sunflower oil is hard to sell.

Farmers should approach sales carefully, as several factors may lower prices in the near future:

• A stronger hryvnia could make exports less competitive.
• Declining global prices for vegetable oils, including palm, soybean, and sunflower oils, could reduce demand.
• High stocks of sunflower seeds on farms, resulting from slower processing this season, may also weigh on prices.

Global Trends Affect Sunflower Prices

Globally, sunflower oil prices dropped by 2,4% this week to USD 1,27 per kg, nearing levels from earlier this year. In Ukraine, sunflower oil prices rose slightly to USD 1,08 to 1,10 per kg for deliveries to Black Sea ports, though trading activity remains limited.

Other key developments in the vegetable oil market include:

• Palm oil prices in Malaysia fell to USD 0,94 per kg, reflecting weaker export demand.
• Malaysian palm oil exports dropped by 18,2–23% between January 1 and 20.
• Soybean oil prices in Chicago held steady at USD 0,99 per kg, supported by higher soybean prices this month.

Sunflower Market Remains Volatile

While current prices offer a good selling opportunity for Ukrainian farmers, global trends may soon influence the market. Falling vegetable oil prices, currency shifts, and changing export demand could cause sunflower prices to drop in the coming weeks. Farmers are encouraged to keep a close eye on market developments to make informed decisions.
