Fresh Ginger Arrivals Keep Prices Stable In India

Fresh Ginger Arrivals Keep Prices Stable In India

Fresh Ginger Arrivals Keep Prices Stable

Fresh stocks of dry ginger from Kerala and Karnataka are influencing market trends. Despite the winter season, demand for dry ginger remains subdued, limiting any significant price movement in the short term.

In Kerala’s Kochi market, dry ginger prices are between USD 3,24 and 3,60 per kg, depending on quality. The arrival of fresh ginger from Karnataka has also slightly lowered prices in northern markets. In Delhi’s wholesale market, ginger from Bangalore is priced at USD 0,36 to 0,37 per kg, reflecting a marginal dip. Previously, prices had peaked at USD 2,40 to 2,70 per kg, leading to higher sales volumes from farmers.

Farmer Responses and Supply Trends

Last year’s high prices motivated farmers to sell nearly all their ginger crop, with nearly 90–95% of the harvest sold early. This left limited stock for processing into dry ginger. As a result, earlier arrivals were weak, but new supplies from Kerala are now stabilizing availability. Fresh dry ginger from Karnataka continues to support the market’s supply needs.

Seasonal Impact on Ginger Availability

The arrival of fresh ginger from producing states like Karnataka and Kerala has helped ease pressure on supply chains. However, regions like Siliguri are contributing only sporadic arrivals, keeping some upward pressure on prices. The current stock levels are supporting steady trade, although stockists remain cautious.

Even during winter, when ginger consumption typically increases, the market has not seen significant demand. This has been a key factor in maintaining stability. Additionally, producers are closely monitoring weather conditions, as prolonged rain could potentially impact upcoming crops.

Future Expectations

Looking ahead, there is minimal likelihood of a sharp price increase. Traders expect prices to remain stable until the next crop cycle. However, the current average price of common dry ginger is holding at USD 3,00 to 3,12 per kg, with no drastic changes forecast in the short term.

Key Factors to Monitor

  • Production trends: Kerala and Karnataka are currently the primary suppliers of dry ginger.
  • Weather conditions: Clear skies are essential for the upcoming crop. Any unexpected rainfall could disrupt supply.
  • Demand patterns: Low winter demand has kept prices subdued, but festivals or increased consumption could shift this trend.
