Cambodia’s Cashew Industry Expands, Vietnam Leads as Top Buyer
Vietnam Buys 90% of Cambodia’s Cashew Exports
Cambodia’s cashew industry has grown significantly, with Vietnam purchasing 90% of the country’s exports in 2024. Farmers and traders in Cambodia have increased production to meet Vietnam’s rising demand, shipping 815,000 tons of cashew nuts this year. These exports generated USD 1.15 billion, reflecting a 24% increase in quantity and a 31% rise in value compared to 2023.The Agency of Foreign Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade) reported that Cambodia mainly exports raw cashews to Vietnam, India, and China, though Vietnam remains its largest buyer. With Vietnam’s booming processing industry, buyers there are consistently securing Cambodia’s raw cashew supply. However, competition from other markets is slowly increasing, which could affect future trade agreements.
Cambodia’s Cashew Production Hits Record Levels
In 2024, Cambodia produced 850,000 tons of raw cashew nuts, marking a 26% increase from last year. Favorable weather conditions and improved farming techniques helped farmers achieve this record output. Many growers expanded their cashew plantations, expecting strong demand from international buyers.Higher cashew prices have also encouraged farmers to invest more in cultivation. Many local traders believe Cambodia’s production will continue to rise in the coming years if demand from Vietnam and other markets remains strong. Government initiatives have also supported this growth by providing training programs and access to better farming resources.
Cashew Farming Strengthens Cambodia’s Agricultural Economy
Cashew farming has become one of Cambodia’s most profitable agricultural sectors. While crops like rice, rubber, cassava, palm oil, bananas, mangoes, longan, and pepper contribute significantly to exports, cashew nuts stand out due to high international demand and strong pricing. Farmers view cashews as a reliable cash crop, making them a top priority for agricultural expansion. As Cambodia’s cashew sector grows, its relationship with Vietnam remains crucial. Buyers in Vietnam prefer Cambodian cashews due to their consistent quality and high oil content. However, industry experts warn that overreliance on one export market could create risks if trade policies change. The Cambodian government has started looking for new buyers to diversify its cashew exports and ensure long-term stability.
