India Ships Rice to Bangladesh
India has continued to supply rice to Bangladesh under a trade agreement, despite ongoing political tensions between the two countries. On Saturday, a second consignment of 16,400 tonnes of rice arrived at Mongla Port. Reinforcing India’s commitment to its export obligations.According to Bangladesh’s Mongla Food Controller’s Office, the country is set to receive 300,000 tonnes of rice from India under an existing agreement. Of this, 40 percent will be unloaded at Mongla Port, while the remaining portion will go through Chittagong Port.
Second Shipment Arrives from Indian Ports
Two vessels delivered the latest shipment to Bangladesh. The Panama-flagged BMC Alpha, carrying 7,700 tonnes of rice, arrived from Dhamra Port in Odisha. Meanwhile, the Thailand-flagged MV Sea Forest transported 8,700 tonnes from Kolkata Port. This follows the first shipment that arrived on January 20, when the Vietnam-flagged MV Puthan-36 brought 5,700 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh under the open tender import process.
Political Unrest and Bangladesh’s Diplomatic Moves
While trade between India and Bangladesh remains active, political relations have become increasingly strained since August 2024, following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh’s interim government recently announced plans to renegotiate certain border agreements with India, which could further complicate diplomatic ties.Meanwhile, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, has taken over as Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser after Hasina fled the country amid widespread protests. Since August 5, 2024, Hasina, 77, has been residing in India, following student-led demonstrations that led to the downfall of her 16-year rule under the Awami League.
Adding to the tensions, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several of her former officials, accusing them of crimes against humanity and genocide. The Bangladeshi government has already sent a diplomatic note to India, seeking Hasina’s extradition.
Conclusion: Trade Continues Despite of Uncertainty
Despite political friction, India remains a vital rice supplier for Bangladesh. With 300,000 tonnes of rice expected under the agreement, shipments are likely to continue in the coming weeks. However, as diplomatic relations face new challenges, trade and border negotiations could be affected in the near future.Click here to reach our trading platfrom CMBroker
