Millet Rising Demand Pushes Prices Higher

Millet production remains concentrated in the state of India like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, with additional cultivation in western Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. While farmers increased sowing this season, the absence of old stock meant that fresh arrivals sold quickly. Distillery plants have aggressively purchased stock, keeping market inventory low. Current production estimates stand at 17 to 17.5 million tonnes, but food grain consumption has already surpassed 19 percent of total production. Ethanol companies have also entered the market, further increasing demand.

Stock Moves Quickly to Industries, Keeping Supply Low

Since September-October, Indian traders have supplied nearly 80 percent of the new millet crop to stockists and consuming industries. Producer market arrivals have dropped 22 percent compared to the same period last year because traders, having observed previous trends, are bringing fewer stocks to market. With a full year of consumption ahead and limited availability, traders expect strong profits at current price levels.

Price Gains Expected as Stock Runs Low

In key markets like Etawah, Auraiya, and Mainpuri, millet prices have risen from USD 0,25 to USD 0,26 per kg to USD 0,27 per kg. On the other hand, in Rajasthan's Bhilwara and Shekhawati regions, prices have surged to USD 0,29 to USD 0,30 per kg. While in Mauli Barwala, demand for dry millet has lifted prices to USD 0,31 per kg. The premium-quality millet has reached USD 0,32 per kg. However, limited availability persists at these rates.

Finally, no major millet arrivals expected before September. Apart from small volumes in Agra and Mathura by June—supply constraints will likely push prices even higher. Traders holding stock now are in a strong position to see significant profits in the coming months.
