Declining Production Leads to Lower Rapeseed Exports from Moldova
Moldova’s Rapeseed Exports Expected to Drop
Moldova’s rapeseed exports are projected to fall sharply in 2024, reaching 174,800 tonnes, a 41.3% decline compared to the 297,900 tonnes shipped in 2023. This drop is primarily due to lower domestic production and shifting global market trends, according to AgroExpert.md.Despite the decline, Moldova’s rapeseed exports remain significantly higher than in 2022, when shipments totaled just 78,100 tonnes. Agricultural expert Iurie Rizhi noted that while exports are down from last year’s peak, Moldova continues to be an important supplier in the international rapeseed trade.
Key Export Destinations and Prices
Romania remained Moldova’s largest buyer of rapeseed in 2023, importing 8,208 tonnes at an average price of USD 0,58 per kg. The country processes the oilseed mainly for vegetable oil and biodiesel production.Bulgaria ranked as the second-largest importer, purchasing 3,226 tonnes at USD 0,55 per kg. Meanwhile, demand from the UAE has grown, with imports reaching 1,499 tonnes at USD 0,56 per kg. Analysts suggest that Middle Eastern buyers may be processing Moldovan rapeseed for re-export to other markets.
The UK also sourced 1,286 tonnes from Moldova, though at a lower average price of USD 0,49 per kg—the lowest among key buyers.
Challenges and Future Prospects
With declining production and increasing global competition, Moldova’s rapeseed exports face challenges in 2024. However, the rising global demand for vegetable oils and biofuels presents potential growth opportunities. As Moldova navigates supply fluctuations and shifting trade dynamics, exporters will need to diversify markets and explore new processing partnerships to maintain their competitive edge. Despite the lower volumes this year, Moldova’s role in the rapeseed trade remains significant, and its exports could rebound if production conditions improve in future seasons.
