Strong Policies Drive Coconut Growth
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted India's success in coconut production during a question hour in the Lok Sabha. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies for helping the country secure the top spot globally.Chouhan expressed his gratitude to MP Parthasarathy for raising the topic, stating, “PM Modi’s top priority has always been to boost farmers' income. Today, I am happy to sare that India is now the world’s number one producer of coconuts.”
Production Reaches New Heights
According to Chouhan, India's coconut production has grown significantly over the years. “In 2014-15, the country produced 14 million metric tons, which has now increased to 15.33 million metric tons. Our productivity is the highest in the world,” he said.Andhra Pradesh, one of the key coconut-growing states, has also shown impressive productivity levels, reaching 2,5 metric tons per hectare. However, disease outbreaks have been a challenge. To tackle these, the Coconut Development Board has collaborated with central and regional institutions, approving eight new projects for better disease management.
Support for Farmers and Innovation in Research
The minister also highlighted the role of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in helping farmers combat coconut-related diseases. “ICAR has introduced new disease-resistant crop varieties and provided support for affected farmers,” he said.He further emphasized the increasing trust in the government’s Crop Insurance Scheme. “This year, we received 140 million applications from farmers—a record-breaking number. The government remains committed to ensuring maximum benefits for them,” Chouhan added.
