Celery Prices Keep Dropping as Supply Floods the Indian Market

Oversupply and Weak Demand Push Celery Prices Down

Celery prices continue to fall as Indian markets struggle with excess stock and sluggish demand. Over the past two to three days, prices have dropped by USD 0,36 per kg, adding to the steady decline of the last two months. Traders predict a further drop of USD 0,24 to 0,30 per kg before the market stabilizes.

Large Harvest Intensifies Price Pressure

A recent market survey shows that new celery crops from Javra, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Vikarabad, Nandurbar, and Jamnagar have started arriving. With a 27-28% increase in sowing, overall production has surged, leading to a price decline of USD 0,48 to 0,60 per kg over the past six weeks.

Currently, medium-quality celery trades between USD 1,44 to 1,68 per kg, down from USD 1,80 to 2,40 per kg a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s celery is priced at USD 1,08 to 1,20 per kg in Delhi, and even lower in Barmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Amritsar, and Ludhiana. This price gap makes it harder for Indian celery to compete.

Traders Holding Back as Prices Slip Further

Not long ago, high-quality celery was priced at USD 2,52 to 2,64 per kg, but it has now dropped to USD 2,04 to 2,16 per kg. Ayurvedic companies continue to purchase lower-grade celery at USD 1,20 to 1,44 per kg, depending on quality.

Although only 30% of the new crop has entered the market, farmers still hold significant stock. The lack of rain between December and January has improved crop quality, setting the stage for a strong harvest this season.

Conclusion: Price Stabilization Expected Soon

With excess supply and weak demand, celery prices may fall another USD 0,24 to 0,30 per kg before leveling off. Once the market adjusts, traders could see better profit opportunities. For now, buyers have the upper hand, but in the coming weeks, tightening supplies may shift market conditions.
