Farmers Struggle with Falling Prices, Demand Immediate Action
Chilli farmers in Telangana are preparing for a protest on February 18 at Khammam Market Yard. They are frustrated by the sharp decline in prices. Over the past year, chilli prices have tumbled from USD 2,16 per kg to USD 1,44 per kg, leaving farmers struggling with losses.Bonthu Rambabu, District Secretary of Telangana Rythu Sangham, stated that hundreds of farmers will participate in the protest to demand government intervention. He insisted that a Chilli Board—similar to the Tobacco and Turmeric Boards—is necessary to stabilize prices and regulate the market.
Telangana’s Role in Chilli Production and Price Trends
Telangana ranks third in India for chilli cultivation, covering 1,59 million hectares, and second in production with 7,94 million tonnes. The state contributes 16% of India’s total chilli acreage and accounts for 25% of national production.In Guntur, a benchmark chilli market, the Teja variety price dropped by 3,03%, now trading at USD 1,92 per kg. The US 341 and Teja varieties currently sell for USD 1,98 per kg. While the Denvor Delux variety is priced between USD 1,56 - 1,74 per kg.
At Warangal's spot market, the Teja variety is being sold between USD 1,56 - 1,92 per kg Arrivals are around 1,600 bags. Meanwhile, in Khammam, chilli is trading between USD 1,44 - 1,92 per kg, though prices fluctuate daily as traders react to supply changes.
What’s Next for Chilli Prices?
Market estimates for January 2025 suggest that chilli prices could hover between USD 1,56 - 1,80 per kg. However, increasing production costs, unpredictable weather, and pest-related losses continue to put immense pressure on farmers.Farmers are calling for government intervention, including export incentives, better pricing mechanisms, and financial support, to sustain their businesses.
