Rajasthan Government Extends Peanut Procurement to Support Local Farmers

Peanut Procurement to Aid Local Farmers

The Rajasthan government in India has extended the peanut procurement deadline to February 28, enabling farmers to sell their produce at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The government will not accept new farmer registrations during this extension period.

Gautam Kumar Dak, Minister of State for Cooperatives, said the government consulted with the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and decided to extend the procurement period. This decision aims to give more farmers a chance to sell their groundnuts, particularly those who could face logistical issues.

Opportunity Open Only to Already Registered Farmers

Only farmers previously registered with the scheme can sell their produce during this extension. Government officials must ensure these farmers can have their groundnuts weighed and purchased according to regulations.

The government has also taken steps to ensure weighing centers operate smoothly to avoid inconveniencing farmers. These efforts highlight the government's commitment to maximizing procurement and supporting all registered farmers in selling their produce at the MSP.

Updates on Peanut Production and Sales Figures

  • Rajasthan has estimated its peanut production at 10.8 million tonnes for this season.
  • By January 2025, farmers had brought about 300,000 tonnes of mustard to the state's markets.
  • The state has registered 333,296 peanut farmers.
  • 85,506 farmers have sold their produce so far.
  • The total peanuts procured so far amount to 303,000 tonnes.
  • The total value of the procured groundnuts has reached USD 247.35 million.
Initially, the procurement was to end on February 15. However, the state government obtained approval from the central government to push this deadline to February 28, allowing more farmers to participate.

Conclusion: Extended Deadline Benefits Registered Farmers

The extension of the peanut procurement deadline offers a crucial opportunity for registered farmers to sell their produce at the MSP. Although the process is closed to new registrations, the government has ensured that the procurement centers will run efficiently and fairly. The state’s strategies aim to maximize participation from registered farmers, ensuring they receive fair prices and avoid distress sales.
