India Ends Duty-Free Imports of Yellow Peas

India Ends Duty-Free Imports of Yellow Peas

Government Ends Import Concessions Yellow Peas from February 28, 2025

The Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs in India has announced the end of duty-free imports of yellow peas effective February 28, 2025. This change closes an import policy starting in December 2023. At that time, the government removed duties on yellow peas to boost supply and stabilize prices.

Previously, the government extended this policy three times. The final extension will expire at the end of February 2025. Importers will then need to pay import duties, making yellow peas from overseas less competitive in India.

Impact on Global Trade and Ukraine’s Pea Exports

India imported 6.7 million tonnes of legumes in 2024, including about 3 million tonnes of yellow peas. Major suppliers have been Ukraine, Canada, and Russia. The significant volume from these countries has impacted the global pea trade.

With India's demand for yellow peas set to decrease, major suppliers like Ukraine might face challenges. This expected drop in demand could lower global prices for peas.

Conclusion: Shift in India’s Import Policy Affects Global Markets

India’s decision to end duty-free imports of peas will reshape global trade dynamics. This change particularly affects suppliers such as Ukraine. Exporters there and elsewhere will now need to find new markets. Meanwhile, Indian farmers and the domestic pulse industry may see improved opportunities. Traders are likely to keep a close eye on how these changes affect prices and market dynamics.
