
Vietnam Set to Export Over 7.5 Million Tonnes of Rice in 2025
Mekong Delta to Drive Rice Exports
Vietnam plans to export over 7.5 million tonnes of rice in 2025. Joining hands with the Mekong Delta provinces. As it is providing most of the supply, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Other regions will primarily focus on domestic consumption.MARD's 2025 rice export report states that the Mekong Delta will cultivate rice on 3.7 million hectares, achieving an average yield of 6.34 tonnes per hectare and producing a total of 23.9 million tonnes.
Farmers will use approximately 8.9 million tonnes for domestic consumption, seeds, and animal feed. They will make the remaining 15.1 million tonnes of paddy rice, equivalent to 7.5 million tonnes of processed rice, available for export.
Rice Export Breakdown for 2025
In 2025, Vietnam’s rice exports will mainly include:- High-quality and fragrant rice – 5.6 million tonnes (75%)
- Glutinous rice – 754,000 tonnes (10%)
- Medium-quality rice – 1.1 million tonnes (15%)
MARD has advised the Ministry of Industry and Trade to focus exports during the peak harvest months of February, March, April, July, August, and September to meet market demand.
Expanding Export Markets & Strengthening Trade Policies
MARD has urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade to increase trade promotion efforts. To maintain Vietnam’s strong position in the global rice market. Also expand export markets, ensure efficient exportation of all available rice, and balance the interests of farmers and exporters.MARD also recommends professionalizing rice trading by requiring traders to register their businesses and sign formal contracts with farmers. It suggests providing support policies for intermediary traders that match those of exporting enterprises to ensure better quality control and pricing stability.
Projected Rice Production in 2025
Vietnam expects its total rice cultivation area to reach 7 million hectares in 2025, 132,000 hectares less than the previous year. It projects an average yield of 6.16 tonnes per hectare, reflecting a 0.07-tonne increase per hectare from 2024.Despite the slight increase in yield, the total rice production is set to decline by 323,000 tonnes, resulting in an overall output of 43.1 million tonnes. This highlights the need for efficient export planning and optimized domestic distribution.
