Groundnut Sowing in Uttar Pradesh Faces Major Reduction

Groundnut Sowing in Uttar Pradesh Faces Major Reduction

Reduced Groundnut Sowing in Mainpuri

Groundnut sowing in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri region is estimated to be only 30-35% of the usual levels this summer, raising concerns among traders and farmers. The demand for groundnut seeds has been low, and local farmers are hesitant to plant due to past price fluctuations. Many farmers are considering shifting to alternative crops that promise higher profitability and stable returns.

Market Prices and Demand Trends

At Jhansi’s market, daily arrivals of 20,000 to 25,000 tonnes are recorded, with prices fluctuating between USD 0,47 to 0,48 per kg. When prices rise, sales increase, reflecting farmers’ sensitivity to price movements. A surge in prices to USD 0,51 per kg resulted in an increase in bag prices from USD 480 to 504 per bag. However, demand for exports and oil mills remains low, keeping overall market trends subdued.

Challenges Affecting Sowing Decisions

Several factors have contributed to the decline in groundnut sowing. Farmers are wary of uncertain pricing, as previous years have seen significant price drops during peak harvest season. Additionally, fluctuating weather conditions and lack of sufficient irrigation infrastructure have further discouraged them from planting groundnut on a large scale.

Farmers are also facing difficulties in acquiring quality groundnut seeds at affordable rates. Many suppliers have raised prices due to limited stock availability, adding another hurdle for cultivators. With reduced government intervention in ensuring fair market prices, many small farmers are struggling to sustain profitability.

Future Market Expectations

Industry analysts suggest that the government’s procurement policies and potential export opportunities could influence price trends in the coming months. If international demand for Indian groundnuts increases, prices may stabilize, encouraging more farmers to plant the crop in the next season. The impact of rising edible oil prices may also play a role in determining domestic groundnut market trends.

Experts recommend that farmers explore diversified cropping patterns to mitigate risks associated with price volatility. Some regions are promoting intercropping strategies that combine groundnut with other high-value crops to maximize returns.

Conclusion: Groundnut Market Remains Uncertain

While local demand is stable, farmers are opting for more profitable crops due to unpredictable market conditions. If export demand improves and the government offers price incentives, the groundnut market may see recovery. However, for now, slow arrivals and cautious buying define the market, leaving the future of summer groundnut sowing in Uttar Pradesh uncertain.
