Strong International Demand Boosts Profits for Indian Lentil Farmers

Strong International Demand Boosts Profits for Indian Lentil Farmers

Indian Lentil Farmers Increased Sowing Activity

Indian lentil farmers has increased this sowing activity season, with higher sowing reported across all major producing states. Lentil arrivals have begun in major trading hubs such as Mungawali Ganj, Basoda Sagar, Bhopal, and Binaganj in Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, the harvest in Uttar Pradesh is expected to start within the next 15 days, while Rajasthan’s lentil crop is also nearing harvest readiness. Despite increased production, farmers are closely monitoring global price movements before deciding on large-scale sales.

Lentil Prices Stay Firm Due to Global Demand

Due to price pressure in Madhya Pradesh, thick lentils are currently selling for USD 0,67 to 0,71 per kg, depending on moisture and quality. In Delhi, lentils are priced between USD 0,76 per kg. Prices have softened slightly from last week but remain supported by international trends.

Canadian lentils, a major competitor in the global market, are currently priced at USD 0,74 per kg. With Canada recently witnessing a USD 25-30 per metric ton price increase, imported goods remain expensive, limiting the scope for further domestic price drops. At Mundra Port, lentil prices remain above USD 0,72 per kg, ensuring a steady domestic market.

India's Lentil Consumption and Dependence on Imports

Despite an estimated domestic production of 16.50 lakh metric tonnes, India’s annual consumption remains much higher at 28 lakh metric tonnes. This gap ensures that the country remains dependent on imports, making domestic pricing largely influenced by global trends. Any changes in international trade policies or government intervention could impact future price movements.

The price gap between domestic and imported lentils has now narrowed, reducing the likelihood of further price drops. Traders suggest that once prices stabilize at USD 0,74 to 0,75 per kg, open-market trade could resume more actively.

Conclusion: Global Market Trends to Shape Lentil Prices

With rising global prices and steady demand, lentil prices are unlikely to decline significantly in the near term. Market analysts expect local lentils to reach USD 0,84 per kg in the coming months. Given the strong fundamentals, traders and farmers should consider strategic selling to maximize profits while maintaining supply balance. International price trends and government import policies will play a crucial role in shaping the lentil trade moving forward.
