Revised Safety Standards Aim to Enhance Market Access for Indian Spices
FSSAI Prepares New MRL Framework for Indian Spices
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is finalizing a new Maximum Residue Level (MRL) framework for spices and culinary herbs. This update aims to enhance market access for Indian spice exporters by aligning domestic standards with international benchmarks. The number of approved MRLs will increase from 11 to 98, a significant step forward for the spice industry.Industry Leaders Welcome New Standards
During the International Spice Conference 2025 in Bengaluru, Paresh Shah, Chairman of the Scientific Panel on Pesticide Residues, highlighted how the updated framework would benefit the industry. Ramkumar Menon, President of the World Spices Organization, also emphasized the importance of these changes, noting that the increased number of MRLs would help resolve disputes with international regulatory authorities and reduce rejection risks.Impact on Spice Exports and Market Growth
Indian spice exports reached a record USD 4,46 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, showing a 7,91% growth year-on-year. The new MRL framework is expected to further boost exports by providing clarity and compliance standards for processors and exporters. India, which accounts for 25% of the global spice trade, aims to double its exports to around USD 10 billion by 2030.Strict Quality Control Measures Implemented
The Spices Board has introduced stringent quality control measures, including mandatory ethylene oxide testing for exports to European Union, Hong Kong, and Singapore. These measures are part of a broader strategy to enhance food safety and ensure regulatory compliance in international markets. Conclusion: A Promising Future for Indian Spices
The upcoming MRL framework is expected to enhance India’s competitiveness in the global spice market. By offering more MRLs, the framework will support exporters in meeting international standards, reducing trade barriers, and increasing market access. The Indian spice industry stands to benefit significantly from these changes, which could lead to sustained growth in the coming years.
