Cumin Production in Rajasthan May Fall by 25-30% This Year

Cumin production in Rajasthan could drop by 25-30% this year because of unfavorable weather conditions. Hotter temperatures and delays in planting have significantly hurt yields in major cumin-producing areas.

Current Market Situation

New cumin has started arriving in markets, and trading activity should increase after Holi. Today, markets saw five lots of cumin traded, varying in quality. A total of 20 bags were sold, with new cumin priced at USD 3,00 per kg. Older stock is selling between USD 2,28 to 2,46 per kg. Prices remain unsteady because of limited availability.

Crop Conditions Across Rajasthan

The cumin crop condition varies across Rajasthan:

Farmers in regions with lower yields face difficulties from delayed planting and rising temperatures expected to climb another 6-7°C in the coming days.

Weather Impacts on Crop Yields

  • High temperatures are causing cumin production to fall by about 25-30% compared to last year.
  • Jowar crops in the Poti area might yield just 1-2 maunds per bigha, significantly below average.

Price Trends and Anticipated Changes

After Holi, demand from spice companies will likely increase, as bulk purchases typically rise in April.

International Market Update

At the Gulf Food Trade Event, cumin prices reached USD 4,68 per kg, driven by exporter short-selling. Prices for jar spices, previously high at USD 7,00 to 7,80 per kg, have now fallen sharply to USD 2,50 per kg. This price drop encouraged buyers to purchase an additional 2-4 containers.

Market Supply and Selling Strategies

About 1,5 to 2,0 million bags of cumin are likely to enter markets soon, but most farmers who planned to sell early have already done so. As a result, cumin supply remains limited. Many farmers are choosing to hold their stocks, hoping for better prices later.

With limited domestic supply and uncertain international prices, the cumin market could experience more fluctuations after Holi.
