India Assures Full Procurement of Tur to Boost Pulses Production

Tur Procurement Extended; Mustard and Chickpeas Included for Rabi Marketing 2025

Complete Government Support for Tur Farmers

For pulses production, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reaffirmed the Indian government's commitment to procure 100% of tur (pigeon pea) production to encourage domestic pulses cultivation. By March 25, central agencies like NAFED and NCCF had already procured 2.46 lakh tonnes of tur at the minimum support price (MSP). Benefiting around 1.71 lakh farmers from states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana. Tur prices in Uttar Pradesh are currently trading above the MSP, reflecting strong market conditions.

Approved Pulses Procurement Details for Rabi Season 2025

Pulses Procurement Period and PM-Asha Yojana Extended

To support pulse production and reduce imports, the government approved procurement under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) covering the entire state-level production of tur, urad, and lentil for the 2024-25 marketing year. The recent Budget 2025 announcement further assured this 100% procurement support would continue till the 2028-29 marketing season under PM-Asha Yojana. Additionally, the procurement window for tur in Karnataka has been extended by 30 days to May 1, providing farmers ample opportunity to benefit from the MSP.

Simplified Procurement Processes

The Centre is promoting transparency and ease of procurement by simplifying registrations on portals managed by NAFED and NCCF. Minister Chouhan emphasized that ensuring MSP to farmers is a priority. And urged state governments to strictly implement the MSP policy, thereby directly benefitting pulse growers.

The government's comprehensive procurement policy aims to stabilize prices, enhance farmer income, and ensure self-sufficiency in pulses production, significantly reducing India's dependence on pulse imports in the long run.
