US Sorghum Achieves Top Grade for Sixth Consecutive Year

US Sorghum Achieves Top Grade for Sixth Consecutive Year

US Sorghum Quality Remains High, Earns No. 1 Certification Again

For the sixth consecutive year, the US sorghum crop has met and exceeded the requirements for the US No. 1 certification. Recently, the US Grains Council (USGC) released its 2024–25 Sorghum Quality Report, highlighting the excellent quality of this year's harvest. This report is important because it assures global buyers of consistent product quality.

Positive Quality Indicators Reported

This year's study included 95 samples from 15 elevators in the central and southern US. These areas are key, as they represent nearly all US sorghum exports. Importantly, several positive findings were reported:
  • First, total damage was extremely low at just 0,3%. Moreover, no heat damage was detected at all.
  • Secondly, kernel diameter, which indicates crop maturity and strength, remained stable. It matched both last year’s data and the five-year average.
  • Additionally, tannins—compounds that can negatively impact taste and quality—were entirely absent, as they have been for six years running.
  • Finally, the levels of starch and oil content increased compared to the previous season, making this crop even more attractive.

Building Trust Through Transparency

In addition, Verity Ulibarri, Chairwoman of the USGC, emphasized the importance of transparent reporting. She explained, “Our goal is to develop markets, facilitate trade, and improve global lives. Clear information about grain quality helps our international partners make better buying decisions.”

The samples for this study were carefully collected by the Amarillo Grain Exchange and analyzed at Kansas State University's Grain Quality Testing Lab. There, scientists calculated averages for each quality measure, ensuring precise results.

In short, the consistently high certification underscores the reliability of US sorghum. As a result, it remains a strong choice for buyers in international grain markets.
