EU Sunflower Forecast Raised While Rapeseed Holds Steady

EU Sunflower Forecast Raised While Rapeseed Holds Steady

EU Sunflower Output Now Pegged at 10.6 Million Tonnes

Strategie Grains has revised its forecast for EU sunflower production in the 2025–26 marketing year to 10.6 million tonnes, up from 10.5 million tonnes projected earlier. This new estimate reflects a 26% increase over 2024–25 output. The upward revision is attributed to favorable spring weather across Europe, which has aided early development in sunflower-growing regions.

In contrast, the agency kept its forecast for EU rapeseed production unchanged at 19 million tonnes. Marking a 13% increase from the previous year. Eastern Europe, in particular, is expected to benefit from recent waves of precipitation, which are improving the outlook for the ongoing rapeseed crop.

Weather Conditions Support Crop Recovery

Europe’s rapeseed is typically sown in late summer or early autumn, while sunflower sowing begins in spring. Last season, the EU experienced major disruptions in oilseed output due to extreme weather, including both intense rainfall and high temperatures. The result was a substantial reduction in rapeseed and sunflower supplies during 2024–25.

This year, conditions have improved significantly. The report notes that the current development of both crops has been supported by timely rainfall and mild temperatures, particularly in eastern Europe.

Market Prices Expected to Shift Differently

According to Strategie Grains, rapeseed prices in the EU still hold potential for an upward move through June 2025, owing to tight availability of both rapeseed and rapeseed oil. Meanwhile, sunflower prices are considered somewhat inflated and may see a mild correction to encourage higher processing volumes.

In the soybean market, prices are likely to remain steady due to a balanced supply-demand situation across the EU and globally. Strategie Grains expects no major shifts in soybean prices in the coming months.
