India Begins Wheat Procurement Season With Strong Surplus
India Wheat Procurement Crosses 8.5 million Tonnes By March 31
India’s wheat procurement season has officially begun with a strong opening. By March 31, total wheat procurement had touched 8.5 million tonnes, showing a massive lead compared to 2.5 million tonnes purchased during the same period last year. This early advantage comes largely from advance buying in Rajasthan starting March 10.The central government has set a procurement target of 313 million tonnes for this season. Based on the arrival trend and strong activity in key producing states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, experts believe the target is within reach over the next two months.
Bonus Incentives Fuel Rapid Procurement
In Madhya Pradesh, the state government has added a bonus of USD 0,21 per kg over the minimum support price of USD 2,94 per kg. This brings the total support price to USD 0,31 per kg, boosting farmer participation. Procurement in MP has already crossed 8 lakh tonnes, significantly higher than last year.Rajasthan has also contributed with about 40,000 tonnes, and Uttar Pradesh has begun with 3,000 tonnes. In Gujarat, early procurement is underway, with 250 tonnes purchased so far.

Relaxed Norms And Weather Support Procurement
To support farmers in Rajasthan, the Centre has relaxed wheat quality norms. Now, up to 20% shrivelled and broken grains and 10% lustre loss are allowed. This decision followed a request from the Rajasthan government, citing damage from heat and rain.According to the Agriculture Ministry, India is on track to exceed its wheat production target of 115 million tonnes for the 2024-25 crop year.
